Patient of the Week

August 16th thru 20th, 2010

and the winner,with 503 votes, is. . . . JACK

Jack 81710PATIENT SUMMARY: Jack is a Beagle-Boy (as opposed to Bugle-boy). He is 7yrs and 3mo old, and weighs 62.8#. His referring veterinarian is Dr. Sharon Stone of St. Francis Veterinary Clinic. Jack came to us for a left TTA in June of this year. During his 8 week recheck, his mommy had let us know that he was limping now on his right. Dr. Dew’s examination of Jack revealed that he is starting to do well on his left leg, but now his right cruciate ligament has ruptured. Dr. Dew suggested Jack have a right TTA.

TREATMENT: Dr. Dew performed a Tibial Tuberosity Advancement on Jack’s right stifle (knee). Jack also had a couple of soft tissue masses that had become bothersome, so those were removed and were sent to AR State lab for analysis. Jack should do just as well as he did on his right, as far as his cruciate healing is concerned. The results from the analysis of the masses will determine if he needs further treatment for that aspect.

PATIENT SUMMARY:  Sammie is a tiny little 7yr old Poodle weighing in at a whopping 4#. This baby was attacked by a larger dog 3 weeks previous, and Dr. Carolyn McCutcheon at Park Avenue Animal Hospital did a good job at treating his other wounds, but both of his right limbs were in need of a specialists help.
TREATMENT:   Sammie’s Right stifle (knee) was stabilized because of a severe collateral ligament injury, and he had Carpal arthrodesis on his right forelimb, as he was constantly holding it flexed. Due to the possibility of nerve damage, Sammie was given 80% prognosis for having moveable function after his procedures.

We have so many candidates this week, we had to split them up into two polls! So, if you don’t see your favorite in Part One, scroll down to Part Two to place your vote.

CashmerePATIENT SUMMARY: Cashmere is a little Chihuahua. She is 8yrs old and weighs 5.5#. Dr. Marilyn Baeyens of North Hills Animal Clinic referred her to us. She was diagnosed with bilateral patellar luxation, but upon examination by Dr. Dew she was also found to be non-ambulatory on the forelimbs as well. She had a lot of carpal (wrist) swelling. She didn’t seem to have any neurologic symptoms. Dr. Dew was very concerned that she may have rheumatoid arthritis, so he suggested we do radiographs (xrays) of front, rear, and spine, as well as perform arthrocentesis (joint tap) and an ANA (antinuclear antibody) test.

TREATMENT: Her radiographs showed significant soft tissue swelling and joint effusion in the carpi. She had a loss of normal joint spaces in the carpi and left stifle. She does have bilateral luxating patellas, and her coxofemoral joints and spine were WNL (within normal limits). Dr. Dew pulled fluid out of Cashmere’s joint to be sent for analysis to see if she indeed has rheumatoid arthritis, and blood serum to send off for ANA. Due to being uncomfortable as well as not very ambulatory, one would think this girl would be grouchy, but on the contrary she was very sweet. We should get her results soon from the lab, and from those we can determine how best to proceed with treatment for this little girl.

shaynaPATIENT SUMMARY:
Shayna is a Labrador retriever. She is 8 yrs old and weighs 85.2#. Dr. Curtis Campbell referred her to us. Poor Shayna became acutely lame 2 weeks prior to her appointment with Dr. Dew, due to what Dr. Campbell had identified as a left Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) rupture.
TREATMENT:
Dr. Dew performed a TTA. Her prognosis is good for healing, improved function and decreased progression of degenerative joint disease (arthritis). She will be using Glycoflex III, and at her 2 week recheck appointment, we will be addressing her weight with Slentrol.

Congratulations Shayna!

ottoPATIENT SUMMARY:
Otto is a Cardigan Welsh Corgi. He is 13yrs old and weighs 36#. His veterinarian is Dr. Frankie Locklar at Maury County Veterinary Hospital. Otto’s mommy’s friend is the owner of Ike. One of our BioScaffold patients. You can see Ike’s “after” video by clicking the link for Ike. Otto has had a progressive left fore limb lameness, tentatively diagnosed and elbow osteoarthritis. Upon exam by Dr. Dew, Otto was definitely showing signs of lameness on his left fore. His poor muscles had faded quite a bit (we call that atrophy) from non-use. Dr. Dew talked to Otto’s mommy and she agreed to the BioScaffold procedure if indicated. (more…)

POTW July 26th thru 30th, 2010

Patient of the Week

July 26th thru 30th, 2010

and the winner,
with 25 votes, is. . . .

Sally Post OpPATIENT SUMMARY:  Sally
is a sweet little 3yr old 11# Chihuahua. Dr. Chris Gentry at Vilonia Animal Clinic sent her to us for intermittent left rear lameness. It had been getting worse and more frequent. Sally’s problem? Patellar luxation, luckily only her left knee. Her right was not luxating at all. One little extra tidbit about Sally; she has a little issue with scratching her left side with her left rear limb, so when she came to us she had these cute little plastic covers on her nails… The mini–pedi we gave her was minus that little foot, because the tips had to stay.

TREATMENT: Dr. Dew suggested a TTT (tibial tuberosity transposition) to correct Sally’s problem. He performed her surgery and all was well. We posted the sweetest little picture of her on our twitter as she was waking up from surgery. You should go and see it! If Sally is kept confined and exercise restrictions followed, with the addition of Glycoflex III to her diet, she should recover nicely.

Congratulations Sally!

Patient of the Week

July 19th thru 23rd,  2010

and the winner,with 17 votes, is. . . . PASCHA

PaschaPATIENT SUMMARY:
Pascha
is a Labrador Retriever. She is 7 1/2 yrs old and weighs 82#. Dr. Derik Stanton at Stanton Animal Hospital sent Pascha to us because of intermittent weight bearing lameness on her left rear for 2 months. (Poor girl!) Dr. Stanton identified a CCL injury (yet another, this is a very common injury in animals and humans alike). Upon examination, Dr. Dew noted positive anterior drawer and medial buttress consistent with left CCL rupture. The radiographs demonstrated minimal degenerative changes in the hips. Dr. Dew discussed TTA (tibial tuberosity advancement) and EFS (external fascial strip) procedures with Pascha’s owner, and she decided to proceed with a left TTA. A TTA works well for Pascha because she is fully grown, unlike the still-growing Drake.
