PATIENT SUMMARY:  Max is a little 6#, 1.5yr old Yorkshire Terrier. His veterinarian is Dr. Dale Kaufman of Town and Country Veterinary Clinic. Max was hit by a car, and Dr. Kaufman had found a number of fractures in his hip.

TREATMENT:  Dr. Dew repaired Max’s right acetabular fracture, and the other less severe fractures will actually heal quite well on their own once the acetabulum is stabilized. Max has a good prognosis for osseous (bone) healing, but exercise restrictions must be followed to make sure his healing has the best outcome and be uncomplicated.

POTW Sept 13th thru Sept 17th, 2010

Patient of the Week

September 13th thru September 17th, 2010

and the winner,
with 305 votes, is. . . .

PATIENT SUMMARY: Dixie is a Labrador Retriever weighing 98.4# and is 4yrs and 5 mo old. Her veterinarian is Dr. E.K. Lloyd at Southside Animal Hospital all the way down in Shreveport, Louisiana! Dixie had shown an acute onset of right rear lameness, and Dr. Lloyd has identified a right CCL injury.

TREATMENT: In the exam room, Dr. Dew observed that Dixie shifts much of her weight forward and struggles to rise. Seeing this, and with examination of both of Dixie’s knees, both of her knees were in need of surgery. He did Bilateral TTA (tibial tuberosity advancement) surgery on Miss Dixie. Since both of her knees would be weak for a bit, and since she’s such a big girl, we sent a Help ‘Em Up Harness with her to help her mommy lift her. Oh, and by the way, her mommy is a teacher! So we want to say “hello” to all of the students reading about Dixie: HELLO!!! As long as exercise restrictions are followed, as Dr. Dew recommends, and medications are used, along with the harness… Dixie’s recovery should be uncomplicated and result in a good recovery!

Congratulations Dixie!!!!

September 6th thru September 10th, 2010

and the winner,with 177 votes, is. . . .

PATIENT SUMMARY:  Indy is a Domestic Shorthair kitty. He is 13 yrs old and weighs 13#. Dr. Carol Entricken at Benton Veterinary Hospital is is referring veterinarian. Indy had a history of cystic calculi and urethral obstruction. Dr. Entricken placed a catheter to allow for free-flowing urine because the obstruction was not allowing poor Indy to urinate when needed.

TREATMENT:
Dr. Dew ordered an abdominal radiograph to assess abdominal density, and subsequently performed a perineal urethrostomy. Indy’s prognosis is good for healing and recovery from the surgery, and he should have significantly easier time urinating as a result. He was feeling pretty frisky already before he left, as he tried to lure us into rubbing his belly by rolling over. Hah! Didn’t fall for that one, sweetie!

Congratulations Indy!!!

and will receive an extra special prize

PATIENT SUMMARYZoe is the little girl Husky who had a Total Hip Replacement the week before last. Last week, while in her crate, she became acutely non-weight bearing lame. Dr. Paul Seminara radiographed (XRAY) her hip, and there were signs of luxation.

TREATMENT: Dr. Dew did an additional xray at a different view to confirm that Zoe’s hip had indeed luxated. He then revised her hip, using the same hardware already in place, but adjusted it slightly. Zoe has a good prognosis for an uncomplicated recovery and pain free hip function. Over the long term, the complication rate for cementless total hip replacement is 4-7%. Many of the early complications (hip luxation and femoral fracture) can be greatly decreased with exercise restriction and nursing care.

PATIENT SUMMARY:  Cupcake is a Welsh Corgi weighing 40# and is 10yrs and 7mo old. Dr. Steven Ambrose at Hillcrest Animal Hospital had referred him to us previously for right forelimb lameness and rear limb ataxia. Dr. Dew had recommended an MRI be performed. The MRI had identified multiple thoracic and lumbar disc lesions as well as a prolapsed disc.

TREATMENT:  Dr. Dew performed a Hemilaminectomy on the prolapsed disc as well as steroid infusion of a tendon that was necessary. Dr. Dew removed a lot of disc material that had been compressing Cupcake’s spinal cord. Swelling from the trauma of surgery can cause worsening of neurologic function at first, however Cupcake’s symptoms should resolve to pre-op state in 3-10 days. His parents can expect improvement to be seen for up to 5 whole months because the nervous system is slow to heal.

Patient of the Week

August 30th thru September 3rd, 2010

and the winner,with 159 votes, is. . . . Maggie May!!!

Congratulations!

PATIENT SUMMARY:  Maggie May is a 6yr 8mo old Lab. She has one dark brown eye and one light blue! Miss Maggie had come to us previously for a Left TTA. Wow, did her mommy and daddy have time with her after that surgery! She licked and chewed and stirred up all kinds of trouble, but in the end, she is doing very well on her Left rear limb now! Dr. Allison Patchell has now identified the need for a Right cruciate repair.

TREATMENT:  Dr. Dew performed a Right Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA), which is the same surgery she had on her Left. Usually after a TTA, no bandages are used. But to make sure that Maggie May didn’t disturb this boo-boo, we not only bandaged her Right rear leg, but we also crowned her with the “lampshade”. We’re sorry, Maggie-poo, but we had to!

PATIENT SUMMARY:  Molly is a gentle Rottweiler weight 82# and is 4yr and 10mo old. Molly had come to us back in October of 2009 for a Left Total Hip replacement. She had been doing well using the left rear, but it seemed the use may have been deteriorating. Dr. Karen Lechelt of Rodney Parham Animal Clinic referred her back to us to see what specifically was going on.

TREATMENT:  Dr. Dew had planned on re-implantation of the femoral stem portion of the THR. When we did radiographs, however, they showed that poor Molly had a healed femoral fracture! Due to the bone changes which occurred during that healing, she was no longer a good candidate for re-implantation. Dr. Dew removed the hardware from her left femur as well as removed the acetabular cup. There was adequate femoral neck resection and soft tissue interposition between her femur and acetabulum. Her prognosis is actually good for healing and resolution of her arthritic pain. Physical therapy will play a critical role in assuring that Molly has a good return of post-operative function. If physical therapy is not completed, then the prognosis for a good result is poor.

Patient of the Week

August 23rd thru 27th, 2010

and the winner,with 33 votes, is. . . . TOBEY!!

PATIENT SUMMARY: Tobey the Baying Beagle (wink-wink) is 6.5yrs old and weighs about 43.5#. His veterinarian is Dr. Howard Foggo of Benton Veterinary Clinic. Toby has had intermittent right rear lameness for several months. Dr. Foggo referred him to us for a cruciate injury.

TREATMENT: Dr. Dew talked to Tobey’s parents about the two different types of surgeries to correct cruciate ligaments, (TTA) tibial tuberosity advancement and (EFS) external fascial strip. They decided on the TTA procedure for Tobers. With followed exercise restriction, the use of Glycoflex III, and Previcox (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory), he should be back to normal in approximately 12 weeks. At one point before he had his surgery, Tobey came up to the front office to “help” with paperwork. He just slept. Reminds me of when my kids help with the dishes and laundry!
